Maxillary sinus augmentation has proven to be a highly predictable pre-surgical approach for increasing bone volume for the placement of implants in the maxillary posterior sextants. We have over four decades of experience in sinus grafting since it was first presented by Tatum in 1977. Many advancements have been made since then. In this presentation, what’s new in sinus augmentation as of 2024 will be discussed. This presentation will focus on four key areas: anatomy, anesthesia, surgical techniques, and graft materials.

Dr. Cafarella will discuss immediate implant placement for single teeth and explain how the use of classification systems is a key to properly evaluating a site and developing an evidence-based decision-making tree when treatment planning. We are confronted with many different situations with regard to socket types and clinical challenges including multirooted teeth, variable bone density and volume, anatomical structures, and periapical pathology. The esthetic zone brings another set of concerns in regard to results beyond just osseointegration and clinical health. Immediate placement provides significant benefits when utilized in the right situation. Even if you are not placing yourself, this same algorithm becomes an important communication tool between you and a referring surgeon, and even for data collection and literature review.
During this lecture, we will review the basic biology of socket healing and two classification systems. First the anterior / esthetic zone, and then a classification of molar sockets, with clinical examples of each.

Patients are requesting treatment options to replace missing or non-restorable teeth that are predictable, minimally invasive and cost effective. The introduction of novel surgical and prosthodontic protocols, exciting new diagnostic technology, cutting edge implant topography and esthetic prosthetic materials have become available to clinicians at a daunting pace, making it increasingly difficult to make sense of all of this rapidly emerging information. Same-day treatment solutions are an exciting way for clinicians to address commonly cited barriers to care. The concept of “immediacy” in implant prosthodontics is a wonderful example of a patient-friendly solution. Patients can present to our office with a non-restorable tooth that requires extraction and leave our offices a few hours later with the tooth extracted, a dental implant placed and a screw-retained provisional restoration. The idea of immediate implant placement and provisionalization for a full arch continues to be the answer many patients have been looking for. The available protocols, supported by the required infrastructure and logistics, yield a transformative experience for completely edentulous patients and patients with a terminal dentition.
Objectives
1. To understand some of the common barriers to care for patients requiring implant prosthodontic treatment.
2. To define the concept of “immediacy” and how partially and completely edentulous patients may benefit from same-day treatment protocols.
3. To describe specific implant prosthodontic protocols that embrace the available clinical evidence to provide patient-friendly solutions.

Dr. Anas Aloum is a board certified prosthodontist running a full time practice at Hikma Medical Center in Abu Dhabi, UAE as the chief dental supervisor and the dental laboratory director. He also serves as the chief medical advisor for Eon Aesthetics, Amman, Jordan.
Dr. Aloum received his degree in Advanced Prosthodontics and a Preceptorship in Periodontology and Implantology at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC. He is a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontics.
In modern dentistry, single implant supported restorations represent the most conservative clinical approach to the replacement of single missing teeth. In the treatment planning stage, during the surgical placement and prosthetic steps, as well as throughout the laboratory phases, the most advanced clinical, technical, and digital innovation can, today, be utilized successfully. However, each innovation must be mediated and implemented using fundamental biological principles to ensure the success, in terms of function, esthetics, and longevity of the final prosthesis.
Therefore, the purpose of this presentation will be to emphasize the importance of combining new digital knowledge and “sound” prosthetic principles in single implant supported restorations.

As dentists, we strive to maintain our patient’s dentition. Despite our best efforts we are faced with the reality that many of our patients will require replacement of some or all of their teeth. As clinicians, we are often faced with the challenge of limited bone quantity in the posterior maxilla. As dental implant therapy has evolved, so has the ability to overcome limited bone quantity. The DASK provides a very efficient and effective method of sinus grafting in the posterior maxilla with either a direct or indirect approach.
Objectives:
Understand the sinus anatomy and its surrounding structures and how it affects surgical techniques
Become familiar with different sinus lifting techniques and case selection criteria for each technique
Learn how to utilize the different sinus lift instruments by reviewing cases

Peri-implantitis is a biofilm induced host mediated disease which will be complex to manage.
Preventing the pathology lies on understanding it, its risk factors and adapting patients' management.
When the peri-implantitis occurs, its treatment can be successful if adequate surgical and protocols are implemented.
Finally, the host being essential in the development of the disease, we may need for patients with advanced periodontal susceptibility to modify our strategies to delay implant placement.
Objectives:
Understand peri-implant health and the different risk factors that lead to peri-implantitis
Analyze the prevalence of peri-implantitis and compare between periodontitis and peri-implantitis
Recognize the importance of periodontal risk evaluation and become familiar with different treatment modalities & its outcomes

What happens when you send an implant-impression to the lab? How does the laboratory technician fabricate the crown? To many clinicians, the procedures that take place in the dental laboratory are a “grey-area” of knowledge that we don’t often get to see. This second part of our two-part mini digital dental series is designed to introduce the clinician to one of the many softwares available to highlight some of the aspects involved in digital restoration design. A live demonstration of use of the Exocad DentalCAD software will focus on the steps and records required to design a single-tooth implant supported crown. Although it is unlikely for clinicians to design their own implant restorations, knowledge of the design process is critical to understand what type of clinical records that technicians need to accurately fabricate the crown.

Dr. Michael Danielak completed his doctor of dental surgery at the University of Toronto in Canada in 2014. He then worked in private practice for two years as an associate before specializing. In 2019, Dr. Danielak completed his prosthodontics residency program at the University of Southern California and successfully challenged the Canadian prosthodontics specialty boards. Following his specialty training, Dr. Danielak attended a one and a half year surgical and restorative implant fellowship at the University at Buffalo in the state of New York. He currently works full time in private practice in Toronto, Canada and teaches a digital dentistry course to the Advanced Prosthodontics residents at the University of Southern California over the summer semester. Dr. Danielak has a passion for sharing his knowledge in continuing education settings and mentoring dentists and students in implant and digital dentistry.
Implant planning has advanced significantly over the past decade with the introduction of sophisticated digital 3D computer software. While model-based surgical planning and surgical guides can provide clinicians with a good idea as to where to place implants intra-operatively, they lack demonstration of the bony anatomy beneath the soft tissue and quite often leads to “guess-work” during the surgery. Clinicians who are interested in placing implants or are currently placing implants should be able to utilize 3D implant planning software for precise planning and placement of their implants. An overlay of a CBCT scan with digital intra-oral models should be considered as a gold standard for pre-surgical implant planning. At the very least, a working knowledge of various implant planning software can improve communication between the clinician, patient, and laboratory technician during the pre-surgical treatment planning phase.
This seminar is designed to introduce the clinician to a free implant planning software (BlueSky Plan) which clinicians can use to greatly improve the outcomes of their implant placement utilizing guided surgery. Alive demonstration of the software will highlight the steps needed for planning of a single maxillary anterior implant crown from diagnostic records to digital implant placement to surgical guide fabrication.

Maxillary sinus lifts and augmentations can be considered as a daily procedure done by the hands of dental surgeons. Although nowadays the diversity and conservative approaches to lift the sinus exist, we still have a limited knowledge and less of defined protocols of how to manage complications associated with it. These complications mainly happen post surgically but there are other complications that can occur during the procedure. This presentation will review these complications that are expected and how to manage the major ones that commonly happen in such procedures.

This seminar is geared to educate clinicians about the multi-faceted aspect of peri-implant bone loss. Throughout the past 20-30 years, much of the literature has targeted “implant overload” from an improper implant occlusal scheme as a direct cause for bone loss around ailing implants. But is it the only cause of bone loss? A review of the literature will question this notion, followed by clinical recommendations to harmonize implant prostheses in occlusion with the rest of the dentition in order to reduce the chances of implant overload. We will differentiate occlusal schemes for single implant crowns, multiple-unit implant prosthetics, and full arch implant prosthetics which can be implemented in your day-to-day restorative practice.

Teeth extractions are one of the most common procedures in clinical practice, due to non-restorable caries, periodontal disease, trauma and other conditions. After tooth extraction, dimensional changes in the alveolar bone and soft tissue can be observed. The most relevant volumetric changes take place in the first three months, the greater changes are observed at the buccal bone plate.
Socket preservation techniques have been described, using auto-grafts, allografts, xenografts or alloplastic materials. In recent years a new approach in socket preservation includes the use of the second generation of Platelets Concentrates (L-PRF). This presentation will be an overview of the different socket preservation techniques, since the use of graft materials until L-PRF.
